All that is Lost

Never again to make me laugh
Never even to make me cry
Never again to lend me a hand
Nor ever to seek my counsel

Your sister won’t know your guiding hand
Your brother will miss your advice
You won’t watch your mother and I grow old
Nor pass along our words to your child

Never to struggle with your job or your life
Never to be lost on the unknown path
Never to survive a broken heart
Never to learn from your past

Never to marry on a warm spring day
No call when your child is born
Never to mentor your daughter or son
You’ll not know the joys I have known

My heart breaks over all that will never be
